Yes--- I have started another one. This one is all Catholic, all the time. View from the Pew. After much thought and several rants here I have decided that there is so much to comment on with regard to the Catholic Church in this country--- and the resultant struggles of those trying to live as faithful Catholics that I decided to have a place where I can focus on the experience of being a faithful Catholic in America today. This blog will continue as it has been--- a mish mosh of faith, life and ponderings---
I read this today--- and while all of us have probably seen the picture already this article is pertinent to our times--- particularly this election
While residing in his mother's uterus, little Samuel was a moral-legal-political paradox. There was no doubt on the part of his parents that their child was, despite his tiny frame and spina bifida, a human being endowed with the right to go on living. Abortion, though legal, was out of the question. Bruner, law and politics aside, recognized the humanity of his patient and so did the insurance company that covered the bill. Yet some politicians and lawmakers would see nothing immoral about snuffing out Samuel's life in the womb.
This is a paradox we must face--- Our culture today is suffering from a psychoses. We can recognize little tiny Samuel in the picture there as a person--- as did his doctor and the insurance company that paid for his treament in utero--- yet every single day we kill 4000+ "Samuels" at various stages of their life in utero---because they are just an inconvenient mass of tissue--- how can both things be true? How can we as a culture look at Samuel and see a person entitled to receive LIFE SAVING medical treatment and at the same time also as just an inconvenient sexual complication to be gotten rid of any time one desires to do so? Psychosis is characterized by defective or lost contact with reality--- is that the hand of a human being reaching out of the womb--- or is it just a disposable "complication" of sexual intercourse?
