Naw--- I am not running off to sell the farm and await the rapture (BTW--- despite what may be stated in the distorted "theology" of Jenkins and Lehaye--- there will NOT be a pre-tribulation rapture in the near future or EVER---See Matthew 24:22) but I am beginning to pay attention to the fig trees (Matthew 24:32 "Learn a lesson from the fig tree. When its branch becomes tender and sprouts leaves, you know that summer is near."). To those with discerning eyes current events are a forest of fig trees with "tender branches". One does not have to stretch their imagination too much to see Matthew chapt. 24 reflected in world events today. I do not believe Jesus will return tomorrow, next year or even ten years from now--- I could be wrong--- but I doubt that I will see it even in my lifetime (I am 50)---although in all honesty, my heart tells me that it could be very likely that my children and/or my grandchildren could see it happen.
So why is someone like me--- a person who tends to be very rational and logical (some people tell me to a fault at times) suddenly afflicted with the feeling that these times are the beginning of the tribulation--- We all know, thanks to Jenkins and Lehaye, the currently popular Protestant view of these times but the scriptural and traditional understanding of the "end times" (which began when Christ ascended to heaven) has been, until very recent times, that the Church and the world will undergo much suffering through wars, natural disasters, plagues, etc. There will be scandal and persecution which will bring about a purification of the church and the world, this will lead to a short era when people will embrace God and live in peace--- this is when it will be said that the Gospel has spread to the ends of the earth--- and then will come the great apostasy, the rise of the anti-christ, the return of Jesus in glory and then the end of the world---see below:
Besides the sufferings, including death, and the hatred of all nations that the will have to endured, there will be worse affliction within the church itself. This is described in Matthew 24:10-12, which are peculiar to Matthew. Will be led into sin: literally, "will be scandalized," probably meaning that they will become apostates; see Matthew 13:21 where "fall away" translates the same Greek word as here. Betray: in the Greek this is the same word as the hand over of Matthew 24:9. The handing over to persecution and hatred from outside will have their counterpart within the church. False prophets: these are Christians; see the note on Matthew 7:15-20. Evildoing: see Matthew 7:23
So now let's look at some of the fig trees--- Without rehashing it--- THE story of the past year here at home--- the sexual misconduct scandal in the Church--- this has been the biggest scandal since the middle ages. The middle ages were also a time of tribulation for the church and the world--- and the end result was the emergence of the Church which was purified by scandal and persecution (persecuted by the Protestant reformers and Moslems) and then renewed and made stronger by "radicals" like St. Benedict, St. Francis, and St. Teresa who brought great holiness and humility back into the church.
If you notice in the commentary above in blockquotes--- it says the handing over to persecution will come from outside as well from apostates within the church. The mainstream media HATES the Catholic Church, the UN hates the Catholic Church, secularists hate the Catholic Church, Islam (most especially fundamentalist Islam) hates the Catholic Church--- and from the inside Christianity many Evangelicals, Pentecostal and Fundamentalist Christians--- believe the Catholic Church is the Whore of Babylon and while they may not hate Catholics themselves they believe that the Catholic Church is evil and will be destroyed. Now--- within recent months there is a diviseness within the Catholic Church that has been simmering for many years---and it is just about to boil over into an actual schism in the American Church. The line is being drawn along the life and family issues--- most notably of course that being abortion and homosexual marriage. Here are just a few recent stories:

These are just a sampling of the hundreds of articles in secular as well as Catholic national publications in recents weeks. The proverbial tip of the iceberg of a broader spiritual war which is now breaking into the physical world. It brought to mind some prophecies that are not only well known in Catholic circles but have received the approval of the Church. Before I go on I assure you these are not from people that see the Blessed Mother in oddly shaped cinnamon buns or in the shadows cast on the sides of apartment buildings.... these are prophecies about our times--- leading up to and during the tribulations--- from mostly unknown, inconspicuous people who lead quiet, faithfilled--often difficult lives---
Sr. Agnes Sasagawa in Akita Japan, October 13, 1973
"The work of the devil will infiltrate even into the Church in such a way that one will see cardinals opposing cardinals, bishops against other bishops. The priests who venerate me will be scorned and opposed by their confreres (other priests). The Church will be full of those who accept compromises and the demon will press many priests and consecrated souls to leave the service of the Lord."
In 1976 Karol Wojtyla in Krakow Poland--- he became Pope John Paul II in 1978
"We are now standing in the face of the greatest historical confrontation humanity has gone through. I do not think that wide circles of American society or wide circles of the Christian community realize this fully. We are now facing the final confrontation between the Church and the anti-Church, of the Gospel versus the anti-Gospel."
Marie Julie Jehannet 1850-1900
"because of the little respect it has for the apostles of God, the flock grows careless and ceases to observe the laws. the priest himself is responsible for the lack of respect because he does not respect enough his holy ministry, and the place which he occupies in his sacred functions. the flock follows in the footsteps of its pastors; this is a great tragedy.
Ven Anne Catherine Emmerich 18th Century (the nun whose writings inspired Mel Gibson to make his movie on the Passion)
"I see many excommunicated ecclesiastics who do not seem to be concerned about it, nor even aware of it. Yet, they are (ipso factor) excommunicated whenever they cooperated with [sic] enterprises, enter into associations, and embrace opinions on which an anathema has been cast. It can be seen thereby that God ratifies the decrees, orders, and interdictions issued by the Head of the Church, and that He keeps them in force even though men show no concern for them, reject them, or laugh them to scorn."
April 20, 1820: "I had another vision of the great tribulation. It seems to me that a concession was demanded from the clergy which could not be granted. I saw many older priests, especially one, who wept bitterly. A few younger ones were also weeping. But others, and the lukewarm among them, readily did what was demanded. It was as if people were splitting into two camps."
April 22, 1823 "I saw that many pastors allowed themselves to be taken up with ideas that were dangerous to the Church. They were building a great, strange, and extravagant Church. Everyone was to be admitted in it in order to be united and have equal rights: Evangelicals, Catholics, sects of every description. Such was to be the new Church. . .
I saw the Holy Father surrounded by traitors and in great distress about the Church. He had visions and apparitions in his hour of greatest need. I saw many good pious Bishops; but they were weak and wavering, their cowardice often got the upper hand... Then I saw darkness spreading around and people no longer seeking the true Church."
"Among the strangest things that I saw, were long processions of bishops. Their thoughts and utterances were made known to me through images issuing from their mouths. Their faults towards religion were shown by external deformities. A few had only a body, with a dark cloud of fog instead of a head. Others had only a head, their bodies and hearts were like thick vapors. Some were lame; others were paralytics; others were asleep or staggering. I saw what I believe to be nearly all the bishops of the world, but only a small number were perfectly sound. I also saw the Holy Father - God-fearing and prayerful. Nothing left to be desired in his appearance, but he was weakened by old age and by much suffering. His head was lolling from side to side, and it dropped onto his chest as if he was falling asleep He often fainted and seemed to be dying. But when he was praying, he was often comforted by apparitions from Heaven. Then, his head was erect, but as soon as it dropped again onto his chest, I saw a number of people looking quickly right and left, that is, in the direction of the world.
Venerable Vartholomew Holzauser 1658 AD
"During this unhappy period, there will be laxity in divine and human precepts. Discipline will suffer. The Holy Canons will be completely disregarded, and the Clergy will not respect the laws of the Church. Everyone will be carried away and led to believe and to do what he fancies, according to the manner of the flesh.
St. Nilus 430 AD
After the year 1900, toward the middle of the 20th century, the people of that time will become unrecognizable. When the time for the advent of the Antichrist approaches, peoples minds will grow cloudy from carnal passions, and dishonour and lawlessness will grow stronger. Then the world will become unrecognizable. Peoples appearances will change, and it will be impossible to distinguish men from women due to there shamelessness in dress and style of hair. These people will be cruel and will be like wild animals because of the temptations of the Antichrist. There will be no respect for parents or elders, love will disappear, and Christian pastors, bishops, and priests will become vain men, completely failing to distinguish the right hand way from the left. At that time the morals and traditions of Christians and the Church will change. People will abandon modesty, and dissipation will reign. Falsehood and greed will attain great proportions, and woe to those who pile up treasures. Lust, adultery, homosexuality, secret deeds and murder will rule in society.
At that future time, due to the power of such great crimes and licentiousness, people will be deprived of the grace of the Holy Spirit, which they received in Holy Baptism and equally of remorse.
The Churches of God will be deprived of God-fearing and pious pastors, and woe to the Christians in the world at that time; they will completely lose there faith because they will lack the opportunity of seeing the light of knowledge from anyone at all. Then they will separate themselves out of the world in Holy refuges in search of lightening their spiritual sufferings, but everywhere they will meet obstacles and constraints.
And all this will result from the fact that the Antichrist wants to be Lord over everything and become ruler of the whole universe, and he will produce miracles and fantastic signs. He will also give depraved wisdom to an unhappy man so that he will discover a way by which one man can carry on a conversation with another from one end of the earth to the other. At that time men will also fly through the air like birds and descend to the bottom of the sea like fish.
And when they have achieved all this, these unhappy people spend their lives in comfort without knowing, poor souls, that it is deceit of the Antichrist. And, the impious one! He will so complete science with vanity that it will go off the right path and lead people to lose faith in the existence of God
Then the All-Good God will see the downfall of the human race and will shorten the days for the sake of those few who are being saved, because the enemy wants to lead even the chosen into temptation, if that is possible--then the sword of chastisement will suddenly appear and kill the perverter and his servants.
The Father is my hope; the Son is my refuge; the Holy Spirit is my protector. O All-Holy Trinity, glory toThee.
I don't know---could all be a bunch of crazy talk---but you have to admit that when viewed through the lens of current events--- it IS thought provoking---but then this is my personal approach to all things--- first---pray, pray, PRAY--- listen, observe and DISCERN. All we Christians know for sure is that Jesus will return after the things occur that he said must occur--- For those of us living in the "end times" which began when Jesus was taken up in the clouds 2000 years ago---we just have to remember these things---
Matthew 24:42-44 "Therefore, stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come.
Be sure of this: if the master of the house had known the hour of night when the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and not let his house be broken into.
So too, you also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.
So I will continue to watch those fig trees--- and try my best to live as the Master says---
Maranatha!
